The short answer: Look for a zero-gravity preset (knees and head raised together) and, if you can, independent lumbar support. The Nectar Premier Adjustable Base is our first pick for most people; the Sven & Son Platinum adds lumbar lift; the Serta baselogic Silver is the simple, affordable one; the Lucid L150 in Twin XL pairs make a split king.

How an adjustable bed helps a sore back
Lying flat on your back with straight legs puts the lower back under mild tension; many people with low back pain instinctively bend their knees. An adjustable base does that for you, all night. The zero-gravity position, head and knees both slightly raised, spreads your weight and relaxes the hip flexors. Some people with sciatica find it the only position that settles the leg. Raising the head also helps reflux and snoring, which can break sleep and make pain feel worse.
What a base cannot do is fix the wrong mattress. Make sure your mattress is base-compatible; most foam and pocketed-coil hybrids are, and several listings here say so explicitly.

Features that matter, and ones that do not
- Zero-gravity preset. Matters. One button instead of fiddling every night.
- Lumbar support. Rare and useful for low back pain. The Sven & Son Platinum lists it.
- Zero clearance. Matters if you want to put the base inside an existing platform bed.
- Split king. Matters for couples with different needs: two Twin XL bases.
- Massage, lights, USB. Nice, but do not pay much extra for them if your goal is your back.

Before you order: reader questions
Are adjustable beds good for back pain?
Many people with low back pain find a slight head and knee raise more comfortable than lying flat. They do not replace a supportive mattress.
What is the zero-gravity position?
Head and knees raised together so the legs sit roughly level with or above the heart. It spreads weight and eases tension in the lower back.
What is the best bed for back problems?
For most people, a supportive medium-firm mattress; for some, the same mattress on an adjustable base with a zero-gravity setting. If your back problem is diagnosed, ask your clinician which positions to use.
Can I use my existing mattress on an adjustable base?
Usually, if it is foam or a pocketed-coil hybrid. Check the mattress listing; the Lucid L150 lists 8–14 inch mattresses as compatible.
