The short answer: If you need similar firmness, choose a medium-firm hybrid with good motion isolation: the DreamCloud Premier or the Casper Original Hybrid. If you need different firmness, two Twin XL mattresses on a split king base beat any compromise. The Sweetnight CoolNest Hybrid is the budget couples' pick.

What couples should check
- Motion isolation. If your partner's movement wakes you, your back gets less rest. Foam layers absorb motion; pocketed coils help; older interconnected springs do not.
- Edge support. Couples use more of the mattress, including the edges. Weak edges shrink the usable surface and make it harder for someone with a sore back to sit up and get out.
- Combined weight. Add your weights and check the listing's limit, especially on budget beds.
- Different needs. If one of you needs firm and the other soft, a single compromise bed often suits neither.

The split king route
A split king is simply two Twin XL mattresses side by side on two bases (or one frame). Each of you chooses your own firmness, and with adjustable bases, your own position. The seam down the middle is the trade-off. For couples where one person has a bad back and the other does not, it is usually the cleanest answer. Brooklyn Bedding's three firmness levels and DreamCloud's Twin XL sizes make it easy to mix.

Before you order: reader questions
What mattress is best for couples with different firmness needs?
Two Twin XL mattresses of different firmness on a split king base. If you want one mattress, choose medium-firm with zoning, such as the Casper Original Hybrid.
Do hybrid mattresses transfer motion?
Pocketed-coil hybrids transfer far less than traditional innersprings, and a thick foam top layer reduces it further.
Is a king or queen better for couples with back pain?
A king gives each person about the width of a Twin XL; a queen gives each about the width of a crib. If your back makes you restless, the extra room helps.
