Best mattress for heavier people with back pain

If you weigh more than about 230 lb, most mattress advice is written for someone else. You sink deeper, foam wears faster, and edges collapse sooner. These beds are built with that in mind.

Why heavier sleepers need different beds

Most mattresses are designed around an average-weight sleeper. Above about 230 lb, three things change. You compress the comfort layers further, so a "medium" bed feels soft and the hips sink. You put more load on the support core, so thin foam bases and low-gauge coils wear sooner. And you put more weight on the edges when you sit to put on socks, which is often where cheap beds fail first.

So: one step firmer than your position suggests, a coil unit rather than an all-foam core where possible, and a stated weight limit comfortably above your weight (or your combined weight, if you share). Listed limits are the maker's figures; we report them as listed.

"Not stated on listing" means the Amazon page we read did not say. Ask the seller before you rely on it.

If you share the bed

Add both weights together and check the limit. If one of you is much heavier, the lighter partner may find the right bed for the heavier one too firm. A split setup (two Twin XL mattresses on a split king base) solves that more cleanly than any single mattress.

Base and frame

A heavy mattress on a weak frame sags in the middle no matter how good the mattress is. Check that your frame has a center support leg, and that slats are no more than about three inches apart for foam beds. Adjustable bases list their own capacity: see adjustable beds.

Before you order: reader questions

What firmness is best for heavy people with back pain?

One step firmer than the usual advice for your position: side sleepers around 6–7, back sleepers 7–8, stomach sleepers 8–9.

Are hybrid mattresses better for heavier people?

Generally yes. A coil core supports more weight, wears more slowly and keeps edges firmer than most all-foam beds.

How much weight can a mattress hold?

It depends on the model. In our set, listings range from 500 lb to 1,000 lb for a queen. Check the listing and leave room above your weight.
