The short answer: Pick the firmness first, then the bed, then the moment to buy. Compare price by size, not by headline. Check who sells it (the maker, Amazon.com, or an unknown third party) and read the trial terms before you order: length, whether you must keep it a minimum number of nights, and who pays for pickup.
Step one: decide what you are buying before you look at prices
Mattress pricing is built to make you compare discounts instead of beds. Before you open a single sale page, write down three things: the firmness range you need (our firmness guide helps), whether you want foam or coils, and the size. Everything below is easier once those are fixed.
How to compare mattress prices
- Compare the same size. A queen price and a king price for "the same mattress" are different products with different ASINs on Amazon. Our product boxes list the queen ASIN and its other sizes.
- Compare the same version. Brooklyn Bedding's Signature Hybrid comes in three firmness levels; Nolah's Evolution in three feels plus pillow-top options. A deal on one version says nothing about the others.
- Look at who sells it. On Amazon, a mattress can be sold by Amazon.com, by the maker's own storefront, or by a third party. All three are legitimate; they handle returns differently.
- Ignore the "list price" strikethrough. It is a reference figure, not a price anyone necessarily paid.
We do not print prices on this site. They move weekly and by size, and a number on a page goes stale faster than any other fact. The buttons under each bed show today's figure.
When mattress deals tend to happen
US mattress sales cluster around federal holiday weekends (Presidents Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day), then Black Friday through Cyber Monday, and on Amazon, Prime Day and the autumn Prime event. Online brands run some kind of promotion almost every week, so the realistic goal is not "wait for the one big sale" but "do not pay the undiscounted price". If your back is bad now, sleeping well this month is worth more than the last few percent.
Trials and returns: read these lines before you order
- Length. In our set, trials range from 60 days (a topper) to 365 nights. Several Amazon listings state none at all; we flag those as "Not stated on listing".
- Minimum nights. Some makers require you to keep the bed 30 nights before you can return it, so your body has time to adjust.
- Pickup. Many boxed beds are donated or collected rather than repacked, but the terms vary by maker and by seller. Ask before you order if this matters to you.
- Conflicting numbers. The Plank Firm Luxe listing shows 365 nights in one place and 120 in another. When that happens, message the seller and keep the reply.
Bed-in-a-box or delivered flat?
Most mattresses here arrive compressed in a box. They are easy to get upstairs, but they weigh 70–110 lb, need a day or two to expand fully, and smell of new foam for a little while. Sealy's Posturepedic listings on Amazon work differently: free in-home delivery, set up in the room, and the option to have the old mattress taken away. For people with a bad back, that last part is not a small detail. See the Sealy beds on our seniors page.

Reader questions, answered
Is it safe to buy a mattress online?
Yes, if you check who sells it and what the trial says. On Amazon, beds sold by Amazon.com or the maker's own storefront are the simplest to return. Be careful with unknown third-party sellers offering a big-brand bed far below everyone else.
When is the best time to buy a mattress?
Holiday weekends, Black Friday to Cyber Monday, and Amazon's Prime events. But online brands discount most weeks, so if your back is bad, buy the right bed now rather than wait for a slightly better deal.
Why don't you list mattress prices?
They change weekly and differ by size and seller, so any number we printed would be wrong within days. The buttons show the current price on Amazon.
Can I return a mattress I bought on Amazon?
Usually, but the rules depend on the seller and the maker's own trial. Read the listing's trial and return lines, and keep any messages from the seller.
