Nectar Premier review: the medium-firm Nectar, in foam or on coils

The Premier is the Nectar several back-pain lists rank first. Amazon sells it two ways, all-foam and hybrid. Here is how they differ from each other and from the cheaper Classic.

Our verdict: best memory foam mattress for back pain

Nectar's step-up foam bed: thicker memory foam and a cooler cover than the Classic, rated 6.5 out of 10 by the maker.

The short answer: Buy the Premier Memory Foam if you sleep on your back or switch to your side and like the slow, close feel of foam. Buy the Premier Hybrid if you like that feel but sleep warm, share the bed or want firmer edges. Skip both if you sleep on your stomach: the firm Nectar Classic suits you better.

What the Nectar Premier is

The Nectar Premier is a 13-inch mattress, an inch taller than the Nectar Classic. Nectar says the extra inch is contouring memory foam, and that the cover uses more cooling fabric than the Classic's. The all-foam queen has five layers and a tight top; Nectar calls it medium-firm and puts a number on it in the spec table: 6.5 out of 10. Both Premier versions on Amazon were sold and shipped by Amazon.com at our check, with a 365-night trial, a warranty Nectar calls Forever, and an 800 lb weight limit.

The Premier Hybrid keeps the comfort layers and swaps the foam core for pocketed coils, 792 of them in the queen. Its queen listing calls the feel medium rather than medium-firm.

How the Nectar Premier handles back pain

Memory foam's strength for a sore back is that it fills gaps. On your back, the curve of the lower back is met instead of hanging over empty space; on your side, the shoulder and hip sink while the waist is supported. The risk is sinking too far, which is why the firmness rating matters more than the foam itself. At 6.5, the Premier sits in the middle of the medium-firm range the best-known trial on chronic low back pain favored.

Nectar's listing says the Premier relieves back pain. No mattress can promise that, and we read it as marketing. The certification field also says "ACA Endorsed"; we could not find that endorsement published and leave it out of our reasoning.

Foam or hybrid?

  • The memory foam version suits you if you sleep alone or with a restless partner and want the quietest, most motion-damping surface. It is also the cheaper of the two.
  • The hybrid suits you if you sleep hot, sit on the edge of the bed to dress, or weigh toward the upper end of average. Coils let air move and keep the edges firmer.

Who should skip the Nectar Premier

  • Stomach sleepers: 6.5 is a little soft for face-down sleeping. The Nectar Classic (Firm) is the better Nectar for you.
  • People who dislike foam's slow response: a bouncier hybrid such as the DreamCloud Premier will feel more natural.

What the Nectar Premier listing leaves out

As with most lifetime-style warranties, the fine print matters, and the listing does not say what depth of sag counts as a defect. The hybrid's feature list says "368 Night Trial" in one field while everything else says 365; we take 365 as the real figure. And the full-size Premier Hybrid is a separate, older listing that calls its feel medium firm rather than medium.
