The short answer: If you want one answer: the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid suits the widest range of sleepers. Side sleepers who like a softer surface do better on the Purple Mattress or the Leesa Original. The DreamCloud Classic keeps the brand-name trial and coils for less; on a tight budget, the Novilla Hybrid and Zinus Green Tea are the good mattresses that cost the least.

What makes a good mattress, in plain terms
A good mattress does three jobs. It keeps your spine roughly in the line it holds when you stand, it lets the parts of you that stick out (shoulders and hips on your side, the backside on your back) sink in without the middle sagging, and it does both for years rather than months. Everything else, from cooling covers to copper-infused foam, is a secondary detail.
That gives you three practical questions. How firm is it, in the maker's own words or numbers? What is under the comfort layer: coils, dense foam, or a cheap thin base? And what happens if you hate it: how long is the trial, who handles the return, and is the warranty stated at all?

"Not stated on listing" means the Amazon page we read did not say. Ask the seller before you rely on it.
Which type of bed for which sleeper
- Side sleepers usually want 4–6 out of 10. Too firm, and the shoulder takes the load. See side-sleeper picks.
- Back sleepers do best around 6–7. The lower back needs filling in without the hips sinking.
- Stomach sleepers need 7–9. The hips should not drop below the chest.
- Heavier sleepers (over about 230 lb) should go one step firmer than the advice for their position, and favor coils. See heavier-sleeper picks.
- Couples should look at motion isolation and edge support, and consider split options if their needs differ.
A note on "best" lists and dates
Many mattress lists carry this year's date in the title and last year's content underneath. Model names change quietly, trial terms get shortened, and a bed that was in stock in spring can vanish by autumn. We checked every listing on this page in late October 2026 and will mark the date again when we recheck. If you spot something stale, tell us.
Before you order: reader questions
What is the best mattress to buy right now?
For most sleepers the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid: medium-firm, coil-supported, sold by Amazon.com with a 365-night trial. Side sleepers who want softer should look at the Leesa Original or Purple; budget shoppers at the Novilla Hybrid or Zinus Green Tea.
Are cheap mattresses on Amazon any good?
Some are. The Zinus Green Tea and Novilla Hybrid have huge numbers of owner reviews and are sold by Amazon.com, which makes returns simpler. The trade-off is usually durability and stated warranty terms, not first-night comfort.
How much should I spend on a mattress?
Enough to get the right firmness, a real trial and a stated warranty. Above that, extra money mostly buys taller beds, fancier covers and pillow tops. We do not print prices because they change weekly; the buttons show today's.
How often should a mattress be replaced?
Most last seven to ten years. Replace sooner if you see a dip deeper than about an inch and a half, wake stiffer than you went to bed, or sleep noticeably better in hotels.
