The short answer: Choose memory foam if you sleep alone or with a restless partner, like a close, hugging feel, and do not sleep hot. Choose a hybrid if you are heavier, sleep hot, change position a lot, or want firm edges. For back pain, get the firmness right first: medium-firm for most people. Best examples: Nectar Classic (foam) and DreamCloud Premier (hybrid).

Nectar Classic Memory Foam (Firm)
The firm-feeling version of Nectar's classic foam bed, priced well below most brand hybrids.

The real difference
A memory foam mattress is foam all the way down: a comfort layer that softens with heat and pressure, over a denser support foam. A hybrid swaps that support foam for a layer of pocketed coils. Everything else follows from that swap. Coils push back more as you press into them, so hybrids feel bouncier and hold the hips up a little more under heavier bodies. Air moves through coils, so hybrids sleep cooler. Coils at the edge make it easier to sit on.
Foam's advantages are the other side of the same coin. It isolates motion better, it is quieter, it molds more closely, and it is usually cheaper at a given quality level.
Which is better for back pain?
Neither, on its own. The trials that compare mattresses for back pain look at firmness, not material, and medium-firm wins most of them. What material changes is how that firmness is delivered and who it suits:
- Heavier sleepers usually do better on hybrids, which resist bottoming out.
- Side sleepers with sharp shoulder pain often like foam's close contouring, as long as it is not too soft.
- People who move a lot find hybrids easier to turn on; foam can feel like climbing out of a dent.
- Hot sleepers should lean hybrid.
- Light sleepers with restless partners should lean foam.
Our pick of each
Memory foam: Nectar Classic (Firm). Firm memory foam is uncommon, and this one comes with a year to decide and is sold by Amazon.com.
Hybrid: DreamCloud Premier. Medium-firm, quilted, coil-supported, the same 365-night trial and the same seller.

Is memory foam or hybrid better for lower back pain?
Either can be, if the firmness suits you. Hybrids suit heavier and hot sleepers; foam suits people who want close contouring and motion isolation.
Do hybrids last longer than memory foam?
A quality coil core holds up well, but foam density matters as much. Look at warranty and owner reports rather than material alone.
